SuperMarket Coop Update #10--9/13/00
**********
Project Update: I know you are hearing from me a couple of days
early, but I am going to be in classes the next two days and
didn't want to forfeit my straight 10 weeks of updates.
The first class I am taking
will focus on ways to improve our Web site. For example, faster
load time, engaging test and layout, greater user friendliness
and easier navigation. The second class, Web site promotion,
concentrates on "if you build it, will they come".
I think these are both great
opportunities and there is time built into the classes to look
at each student's site and receive professional opinions.
However, I have learned in
the past weeks, that professional feedback is not, in some way,
more valuable. You all have provided extremely helpful tips (examples
below); including product suggestions, reactions to layout and
shipping, as well as packaging tips. As a focus group, a target
market, you have been very generous with your time; responding
to my questions. Thank you.
This week is by no means the
last time I will ask for your opinions, but it is a milestone,
in that starting next week, I will be moving the site layout
and navigation to the top of my priorities. So if there is something
that you have been wanting to share with me, please email me
at webmaster@ruralco.org
Examples of helpful feedback..."This
was very easy to use. It runs very quickly, too. I was thinking
of buying some of the table throws and place mats, but there's
no description of their dimensions, and the images don't show
it entirely. Is there room to add a picture of them on a table?
At least having the dimensions would help."
"I had occasion to meet
with an executive of Seattle Chocolate last weekend and was talking
with him about web strategy. He told me that because of his shipping
costs, it is only practical to sell products on the web in a
minimum order range of $20-30. You are going in the right direction
with higher priced product bundles, I believe."
"I'd change the buttons
at the top if you can. A) They're small. B) They should match
the site colors better. Don't ask me what colors though, as I've
said before, I'm not a graphic designer, I just eat them for
breakfast."
And I am pleased to say, I
really have no examples of unhelpful feedback.
Product of the Week: http://www.supermarketcoop.com
I know it is not a product to buy, but the project itself represents
a concept we want to share and embrace. Working together for
a more just food system; healthier food and a healthier environment
in which the consumer is an integral part. In addition to aesthetics,
I would love to hear what the site communicates to you and how
we could better explain our values and goals.
Next Week: I will be working
on implementing changes surveying for response.
