From a valley nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, beside the crystal clear waters of Spring Creek, Sleepy Hollow Farm produces premium quality medicinal herbs selectively hand harvested from the forest floor and sunny meadows of our organically cultivated farm.
Sleepy Hollow Farm was founded in 1932 by Cindi Beaver's grandfather, Fuller Cochran. In 1993 Cindi and her husband, Randy, recognized that they would one day be faced with the choice of selling Cindi's grandfather's farm or moving there and attempting to make a living. After three years of researching crop options and various other factors relating to mid-career transitions they decided to develop their long time interest in medicinal plants. In 1996 they committed themselves to a Five-Year Plan to convert the farm to the certified organic production of those plants. Today Sleepy Hollow Farm is USDA National Organic Program certified by Oregon Tilth, Inc. as both growers and processors. They produce several varieties of medicinal plants and a wide range of products from those plants including liquid extracts, soaps, creams, lotions, and other toiletry items.
Sleepy Hollow Farm's leadership in the area of medicinal plant production has been recognized by the USDA through five awards from the Small Business Innovation Research program. Their first project entitled Establishing a Viable Organic Goldenseal Production System for Small Family Farms is developing methods for small family farms to produce Goldenseal on currently idle forestland. Goldenseal's popularity has led to it being over-collected from the wild to the point of being declared an endangered species in several states. Their research in this area will allow for more profitability for these small farms while at the same time reducing the need for wild collected goldenseal, giving the plant a chance to recover. The second project, Goldenseal, Processing and Value-Added Product Development, is developing their capacity to produce the highest quality liquid goldenseal extract on the market today.
Sleepy Hollow Farm is a Member of the Institute for Nutraceutical Research at Clemson University, SC. University cooperators with Sleepy Hollow projects include researchers from Clemson University, the University of Illinois at Chicago Colleges of Dentistry and Pharmacy, The University of Georgia Center for AgriBusiness and Economic Development, Rutgers University, and North Carolina State University.
Randy and Cindi are actively involved in the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices through their work with the Team Agriculture Georgia project. This project has a mission to deliver programs to the underserved, beginning, and limited resource farmers in Georgia. Randy has given presentations on opportunities for small farms in the area of medicinal plant production and grant opportunities for small farmers. Randy is also a member of the Georgia Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) Professional Development Program Advisory Council.
Through their SBIR projects Randy and Cindi also developed a cooperative of more than 30 small farmers producing goldenseal and other medicinal plants. These growers provide the raw material for our products.
In short, Sleepy Hollow Farm is a small family run operation dedicated to providing customers with high quality, sustainably produced herbs, and made-on-the-farm herbal products. We invite you to try our products and discover the difference between farm fresh herbal products and those from the store shelf.
